In total hip replacement, the acetabulum is replaced with an artificial liner and proximal femur with an artificial stem. The artificial hip that is inserted into the pelvis or femur region is called prosthesis which is made with metal and plastic. The procedure of implanting the prosthesis can be done with or without cement.

Total hip replacement is an orthopedic operation performed to treat joint failure caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, arthritis and certain hip fractures etc. Initially the pain caused due to such conditions is treated with medications and physiotherapy. Total hip replacement surgery is recommended only when the patient still suffers from severe pain.

This surgery is used to provide relief from severe pain in hip joint, recreating the normal function of hip and restoring the mobility and strength. However, there are several potential complications and risks involved in this operation that one should be aware of before going under the surgery such as:

• Dislocation, loosening, infection, metal sensitivity, nerve palsy which are similar to the complications involved in other joint replacements.
• Breakage of the prosthesis, stiffness, leg length inequality, delayed healing of bone and soft tissues and heterotopic bone formation are the most potential complications of this surgery.
• Thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism or blood clot, urological complications are few medical complications involved in total hip replacement.
